Managing Partner Message

June 4, 2020
Dear Clients and Friends,

As our nation’s cities reel from days of protest, we honor peaceful protest and condemn violence. At the same time, as lawyers, we must be a part of the solution to the bias, systemic racism and indifference that are the root cause of this profound civil unrest.

The murder of George Floyd unleashed a long-simmering reaction to a series of tragedies tied to our country’s long history of unequal justice for Black Americans. We must find the courage to rectify the racism of the past and present. At every inflection point in our country’s history, lawyers have been key to the implementation and execution of difficult, but necessary change. Because of our unique skills, lawyers again can be pivotal in driving successful change.

Haynes and Boone remains committed both to bolstering justice and to the elimination of bias in our country. I encourage you to speak clearly, and without hesitation, against bias and injustice. Let us instill hope in others and for our future. And let us do all this together in community with one another.

Haynes and Boone is developing concrete actions we can take to be part of the solution. In the immediate term, we are offering an internal, all-firm town hall meeting to address the events of the past few weeks and provide a platform for the development of allyship -- the lifelong process of building relationships based on trust, consistency and accountability. And this is just the start. We are looking at ways Haynes and Boone can use all its resources to implement and execute change in our firm and in our communities.

I welcome your thoughts.
