Daily Journal Names M.C. Sungaila Among Top Women Lawyers for 10th Year

05/09/2019

For a 10th consecutive year, the Daily Journal has named Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner M.C. Sungaila as one of the Top Women Lawyers in California.

The Daily Journal featured Sungaila in a profile on May 8, stating: “As an appellate expert involved in a broad range of major cases, Sungaila has built a reputation as a go-to attorney for high-profile work from amicus briefings to oral arguments.”

The article cited several recent wins with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. One successfully challenged a district court’s invalidation of employment arbitration agreement; another affirmed a district court’s dismissal of a breach of fiduciary duty complaint. Another revived a gay Mexican man’s asylum bid, overturning case law that heightened requirements for asylum-seeking child sex abuse victims who did not report their abuse to authorities.

Also on May 8, Sungaila was among 200 nominees honored at the Orange County Business Journal's 25th Annual Women in Business Awards luncheon. In a special report, the publication profiled outstanding professional women who have made significant contributions to their organizations, their professions and the Orange County community.

The publication stated:

“Since joining Haynes and Boone in 2015, M.C. Sungaila’s track record as an outstanding appellate lawyer has raised the law firm’s profile in California. Sungaila, a partner in Haynes and Boone’s Orange County office and anchor of the firm’s California appellate practice, has briefed and argued appeals raising cutting-edge and core business issues, and helped secure important rights for women and girls nationally and internationally.”

At the core of Sungaila’s broad appellate practice is her passion for the rule of law and for helping shape undeveloped areas within it. She has briefed and argued appeals raising cutting-edge and core business issues and helped secure important rights for women and girls nationally and internationally. She is serving a three-year term on the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on the American Judicial System’s Subcommittee on Federal Courts, and co-chairs the ABA Litigation Section’s Appellate Practice Committee. She is also on the Board of California’s Pacific Symphony and is the chair of the RAND Institute for Civil Justice’s Board of Overseers.

Sungaila has repeatedly been named a “Notable Appellate Practitioner” by Chambers USA, Chambers and Partners (2013-2019). In February, she was recognized in the 2019 edition of the Southern California Super Lawyers directory published by Thomson Reuters. This month, Sungaila also was included in the 2019 edition of Chambers USA Legal Directory.
